Chakras: What are They and How to Unblock Them

In this blog post, you will learn everything about chakras in Reiki. We'll explore what chakras are, the benefits of chakra healing, and how to unblock them for better energy flow.

Whether you're new to Reiki or seeking to deepen your practice, this guide will provide essential insights and practical advice on working with chakras.

What are chakras?

Chakras are energy processing centers located in specific parts of the body, extending

outward into the aura.

There are seven main chakras, although there are many minor chakras and even some located above and below the physical body. But for now, we’ll focus on the seven main chakras.

The seven chakras

To make it easier to remember what each chakra does, there are simple two-word phrases for each one.

Each section below will include the number, name, phrase, and color of each chakra. You'll also see that the colors of the chakras follow the order of the rainbow.

Rook Chakra

Phrase: “I Need

Color: Red

The chakra located in the lower pelvis, known as the root chakra, is associated with the basic will to live and essential needs like:

  • Food
  • Water
  • Sleep
  • Safety

When balanced, it helps a person feel positive about life and maintain a healthy sex drive.

However, it can be disrupted by:

  • Severe depression
  • Homelessness
  • Starvation
  • Eating disorders
  • Sexual abuse

This chakra influences the sexual organs, bladder, and bowels, and extends downward from the groin, tilting slightly forward.

Sacral Chakra

Phrase: “I Want”

Color: Orange

The chakra located just above the navel, known as the sacral chakra, is connected to:

  • Intimacy
  • Abundance
  • Creativity
  • Procreation
  • Reproductive organs.

It involves recognition of our unique selves through appreciation, financial reward, and freedom of expression.

Healthy sacral chakra energy is reflected in thriving personal relationships, job satisfaction, and creative expression.

However, it can become blocked by:

  • Job loss
  • Relationship issues
  • Lack of creative outlets

Its imbalance can manifest physically in the menstrual cycle, male reproductive system, hips, and lower digestive system.

Solar Plexus Chakra

Phrase: “I Can”

Color: Yellow

The solar plexus chakra, located at the center of the bottom of the rib cage, relates to our personal sense of power and control over our lives.

Feeling capable and secure is essential, and this chakra can easily become imbalanced due to stress or anxiety, often caused by situations that feel out of our control.

A balanced solar plexus chakra helps us feel more capable of handling challenges.

This chakra affects the upper digestive system and middle back, with stress potentially causing issues like:

  • Ulcers
  • Acid reflux
  • Muscle tension
  • Upset stomach

Hearth Chakra

Phrase: “I Love”

Color: Green

The heart chakra, located in the center of the chest, is associated with:

  • Giving and receiving love and care
  • Self-esteem
  • Feeling lovable

It often needs balancing in caregivers who give more than they receive and in those experiencing grief.

To maintain balance, it's important to eat well, breathe deeply, exercise, rest adequately, accept help, and take time for yourself.

Companionship also supports heart chakra health, as loneliness can indicate an imbalance. This chakra affects our:

  • Heart
  • Respiratory system
  • Upper back muscles.

Additionally, there's an "upper heart chakra" that is pink, slightly above the main heart chakra, both of which relate to love and care.

Throat Chakra

Phrase: “I Express”

Color: Blue

The throat chakra, located at the throat, is associated with:

  • Communication
  • Giving
  • Receiving

It can become blocked in those who hold back from expressing their thoughts due to fear of conflict or other reasons.

Communication issues with others may indicate an imbalance in this chakra. Clearing these blockages can help you communicate more effectively.

The throat chakra also affects our:

  • Throat
  • Thyroid
  • Neck
  • Jaw
  • Mouth

Third Eye Chakra

Phrase: “I See”

Color: Indigo

The third eye chakra, located in the center of the forehead, is associated:

  • Intuition
  • Processing all intuitive information

A healthy third eye chakra helps you feel purposeful, guided, and in tune with your intuition. If you feel lost, purposeless, or disconnected from your intuition, this chakra may be blocked. Physically, it affects our:

  • Eyes
  • Ears
  • Pineal gland
  • Brain
  • Head

Crown Chakra

Phrase: “I Am”

Color: Purple

The crown chakra, located at the top center of the head, extends upward and is associated with:

  • A sense of divine connection
  • Spiritual awareness

This chakra embodies the concept of "I Am," signifying that we are energy, and doesn't require religious belief but relates to the spiritual self.

Feeling disconnected from your spiritual aspect may indicate a need for healing in this chakra. Notably, Reiki energy enters the body through the crown chakra, serving as the spiritual energy inlet during Reiki practice.

Does Reiki open your chakras?

Reiki can help open and balance your chakras by channeling healing energy to clear blockages and promote the free flow of energy throughout your body.

They can be healed by energy, color, sound, aromas, or a combination. Each method still sends a balancing intention to that particular chakra.

What are the benefits of Reiki chakra healing?

The benefits of Reiki chakra healing include improved physical, emotional, and mental well-being, enhanced relaxation and stress reduction, balanced energy levels, increased self-awareness, and a stronger connection to your intuition and spiritual self.
